Eastern Michigan University offers 3 Family Nurse Practitioner Tracks:
- MSN
- BSN-DNP
- Post-Master’s Certificate
Program Tracks Overview
| Program | Est. Tuition | Est. Duration | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSN | $60.2K | 2 years (6 semesters) | 52 |
| BSN-DNP | $92.8K | 3 years (9 semesters) | 78 |
| Certificate | $14.3K–$31.9K | 1–2 years (3–6 semesters) | 12–27 |
Tuition estimates use EMU’s 2026–27 graduate per-credit rates (in-state / out-of-state), plus the nursing differential, the nursing signature fee, and the $225 per-semester student services fee.
600 of Eastern Michigan’s 750 FNP clinical hours sit in the same three adult-gerontology courses its AGPCNP students take. That shared spine is why a certified adult-gerontology primary care NP can add the FNP credential here in as few as 12 credits. Campus travel is capped at six days per semester.
The trade-off is a narrow family-specific block. Pediatrics and antepartum/postpartum care get 150 hours combined, and the MSN and BSN-DNP admit students only for a Winter start.

MSN, Primary Care Nurse Practitioner: Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration
The estimated tuition for the Master’s in Nursing, Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (FNP concentration) at Eastern Michigan University is approximately $60,214 in-state and $100,046 out-of-state (52 credits at $1,132 or $1,898/credit, plus fees). The program can generally be completed in about 2 years (6 consecutive semesters) full-time, or 3 years part-time.
MSN Curriculum
Shared core. All primary care NP students take a 28-credit core covering pathophysiology, a 4-credit advanced health assessment course, pharmacology, nursing theory, research, health systems, role development, and an APRN capstone. The core is identical for FNP and AGPCNP students.
FNP concentration (24 credits). FNP students take the three adult-gerontology clinical courses (18 credits) that form the entire AGPCNP clinical sequence, then add 6 credits of family-specific content in pediatrics and antepartum/postpartum care. AGPCNP students take the same three courses plus two seminar-practicum courses, which is why the FNP concentration runs 3 credits longer (52 vs. 49).
This design means most of an EMU FNP student’s clinical training is adult and older-adult primary care. That suits nurses heading into family practices with mostly adult panels. It also means the family-specific skills are concentrated in two shorter courses near the end of the sequence.

MSN Clinical Requirements
- 750 direct patient care hours: NURS 664 (180) + NURS 666 (180) + NURS 669 (240) + NURS 670 (90) + NURS 674 (60)
- Adult-gerontology courses supply 600 hours (80%); pediatric and antepartum/postpartum courses supply 150
- Campus visits: maximum of 6 days per semester for skills labs, simulation, skills testing, and expert seminars
- Immersion sites: EMU main campus in Ypsilanti and the Trinity Health Ann Arbor hospital campus
- Placement model: not clearly stated
At 750 hours, EMU sits above both the 500-hour certification floor and the 600 to 700 hour range common among FNP programs. The heaviest single course, NURS 669, runs 240 hours, roughly 16 hours a week across a 15-week semester (derived). The 180-hour courses work out to about 12 hours a week. A nurse working full-time should plan on reduced hours during those terms.
You Should Know
- EMU’s pages do not say whether the school arranges preceptors or students find their own. Ask this before applying, since it determines how much of the placement search falls on you.
- Pediatric exposure is limited to the 90 hours in NURS 670. Nurses aiming for pediatric-heavy family practice should ask how those hours are placed.
MSN Admissions
Admission is rolling, but the MSN starts only in Winter, and a phone or in-person interview may be part of the review.
- BSN from an accredited nursing program (RNs with a non-nursing bachelor’s may seek conditional admission and complete bridge requirements)
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (2.75 for conditional admission)
- Current unrestricted U.S. RN license, or eligibility for a Michigan license
- Statistics course with descriptive and inferential content, completed within the last 10 years
- Completed health assessment course and undergraduate community health nursing course with clinical
- Resume or CV and a personal statement (500 words maximum) on your goals as an NP
- Application through NursingCAS; decisions typically take 2–3 weeks
You Should Know
- The program page and catalog list a Winter start, while EMU’s nursing admissions page says MSN programs typically run 20–25 students and take up to 35 “each fall.” Confirm the entry term with the program office.
- International applicants may begin in the Fall semester.
- The catalog requires RN licensure in the state where clinical practice will occur. EMU does not publish a state-by-state licensure disclosure for its NP programs; its accreditation page says requirements outside Michigan vary.
Post-BSN to DNP: Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration
The estimated tuition for the Post-BSN to DNP, Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (FNP concentration) at Eastern Michigan University is approximately $92,791 in-state and $155,655 out-of-state (78 credits at blended rates of $1,132–$1,197 or $1,898–$2,045/credit, plus fees). The program can generally be completed in about 3 years (9 semesters) full-time, or 4 years part-time.
BSN-DNP Curriculum
How it differs from the MSN. The DNP keeps the 24-credit FNP concentration and a 16-credit clinical core, but drops four MSN core courses (12 credits: health systems, nursing theory, role development, and research). It replaces them with 38 credits of 800-level doctoral work. The FNP clinical sequence is identical to the MSN’s.
Doctoral layer (38 credits). Eight 3-credit core courses cover quality and safety, leadership, epidemiology and health disparities, two research methods courses, health policy, and informatics. Students add at least 6 credits of DNP clinical practicum and an 8-credit, three-part scholarly project.
- NURS 664, 666, 669 adult-gerontology clinical sequence (18)
- NURS 670 Advanced Pediatric and Adolescent Health (4)
- NURS 674 Advanced Antepartum and Postpartum Nursing (2)
- NURS 840 Epidemiology and Health Disparity in Health Systems (3)
- NURS 851 and 852 Advanced Nursing Research I and II (6)
- NURS 860 Health Policy and Advocacy (3)
- NURS 882 DNP Clinical Practicum (6 minimum, 1–4 per semester)
- NURS 891–893 DNP Scholarly Project I–III (8)
More curriculum details are available here.
BSN-DNP Clinical Requirements
- 750 direct patient care hours in the FNP concentration (same courses and hours as the MSN)
- 500 additional DNP practicum hours, typically not direct patient care
- Up to 500 APRN clinical hours count toward the 1,000-hour DNP total, so students log about 1,250 hours overall
- Campus visits: maximum of 6 days per semester, at Ypsilanti and Trinity Health Ann Arbor
- Placement model: not clearly stated
The direct-care volume is the same as the MSN, so the DNP does not buy more FNP clinical preparation. The added 500 hours go toward systems-level and project work. Nurses choosing the DNP should do so for leadership, policy, or academic goals, not for more patient-care training.
BSN-DNP Admissions
Requirements match the MSN, including the Winter-only start, with one difference in the personal statement.
- Personal statement must address both the FNP role and the role of the DNP-prepared advanced practice nurse
- Up to 40 students admitted into the BSN-DNP each year
- EMU gives priority DNP admission to students completing its own NP or CNS programs
You Should Know
- EMU’s nursing programs overview describes the post-BSN DNP as a four-year option, while the program page and catalog say 3 years full-time. The four-year figure matches the part-time plan.
- The DNP program’s initial CCNE accreditation runs through December 2027, so a student starting in 2027 will enroll across a scheduled reaccreditation review.
Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Master’s Certificate
The estimated tuition for the Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Master’s Certificate at Eastern Michigan University is approximately $14,259 to $31,914 in-state and $23,451 to $52,596 out-of-state (12–27 credits at $1,132 or $1,898/credit, plus fees). The program can generally be completed in about 1 to 2 years, with many students finishing in 3 semesters.
Certificate Curriculum
Credits depend on a gap analysis of your prior MSN. The certificate has two blocks:
- Adult-gerontology NP coursework: NURS 664, 666, 669 (18 credits, 600 clinical hours)
- FNP coursework: NURS 670 (4), NURS 674 (2), NURS 691 APRN Capstone (3), for 9 credits
The AGPCNP shortcut. Students whose MSN included all of EMU’s adult-gerontology NP courses are exempt from the 18-credit block. They take the 9 FNP credits plus 3 elective nursing credits to reach the 12-credit certificate minimum. This is the certificate’s strongest use case: an AGPCNP adding the FNP population in roughly one year.
Required prior coursework. The gap analysis checks for seven courses (or equivalents) with a B or better within the last 10 years: advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, nursing theory, APRN role development, health promotion, pharmacology, and research. Pharmacology must be within the last 5 years.
More curriculum details are available here.
You Should Know
- The published 12–27 credit range assumes all seven prerequisite courses are already complete. An MSN holder missing any of them (common for education or leadership MSNs) will need them first, and those credits are not included in the range or in the estimates above.
- The certificate page describes the elective requirement for exempt AGPCNPs but does not name eligible electives.
Certificate Clinical Requirements
- Full pathway: 750 precepted hours (600 adult-gerontology + 90 pediatric + 60 antepartum/postpartum)
- AGPCNP-exempt pathway: 150 new FNP-specific hours; prior MSN clinical hours are reviewed through a clinical hours verification
- Campus visits: maximum of 6 days per semester, delivered as one-week immersions or extended weekends
For an AGPCNP, 150 new hours is a light clinical load, which is what makes the one-year timeline realistic while working. For nurses without prior NP training, the certificate is effectively the full MSN clinical sequence at the same 750 hours.
Certificate Admissions
The certificate is the only EMU FNP track with three start terms (Fall, Winter, or Summer).
- MSN from an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (2.75 for conditional admission)
- Unrestricted U.S. RN license or Michigan eligibility
- Statistics course (descriptive and inferential) within the last 10 years
- Resume or CV, personal statement (500 words maximum, APA style), and syllabi for any non-EMU prerequisite courses
- Clinical hours verification if requesting credit for prior FNP-relevant hours
- Offers of admission include the gap analysis and a summary of requirements
You Should Know
- Certificate requirements must be finished within 3 years of the first applicable course.
- State boards set their own rules for NPs adding a second population focus. Nurses licensed outside Michigan should confirm their board accepts a post-master’s certificate for FNP recognition.
Tuition
EMU’s all-in graduate rate for FNP coursework is $1,132 per credit in-state and $1,898 out-of-state for 500–699 level courses. Doctoral (800-level) courses cost $1,197 in-state and $2,045 out-of-state. These per-credit figures are derived from EMU’s published 2026–27 base rates plus two nursing add-ons.
| Component (per credit) | In-State | Out-of-State |
|---|---|---|
| Base tuition, 500–699 level | $1,046.50 | $1,813.00 |
| Nursing differential tuition | $30.00 | $30.00 |
| Nursing graduate signature program fee | $55.50 | $55.00 |
| Total, 500–699 level | $1,132.00 | $1,898.00 |
| Base tuition, 800 level (no nursing add-ons listed) | $1,197.00 | $2,045.00 |
Estimated totals (derived):
- MSN: 52 credits × $1,132 = $58,864 + $1,350 fees = $60,214 in-state; 52 × $1,898 = $98,696 + $1,350 = $100,046 out-of-state
- BSN-DNP: (40 × $1,132) + (38 × $1,197) = $90,766 + $2,025 fees = $92,791 in-state; (40 × $1,898) + (38 × $2,045) = $153,630 + $2,025 = $155,655 out-of-state
- Certificate: 12 credits over 3 semesters = $14,259 in-state / $23,451 out-of-state; 27 credits over 6 semesters = $31,914 / $52,596
Confirmed costs:
- Graduate base tuition per credit (500–699 level): $1,046.50 in-state, $1,813.00 out-of-state
- Nursing differential tuition: $30.00 per credit (500–799 level)
- Nursing graduate signature program fee: $55.50 in-state, $55.00 out-of-state per credit (500–699 level)
- Student services fee: $225 per semester
- Graduate application fee: $45; graduation application fee: $110
Official rates are on EMU’s tuition and fees page, graduate and doctoral program fees page, and other fees page.
Be aware that:
- EMU states that all online courses are charged the in-state rate. The FNP tracks are classified in the catalog as “In-person/hyflex,” and EMU does not say whether hybrid NP courses qualify. If they do, out-of-state students would pay close to the in-state totals. Confirm your billing status with Student Business Services before budgeting.
- The BSN-DNP estimate bills its 38 doctoral credits at the base 800-level rate. EMU lists the nursing differential only for course levels 500–799 and the nursing signature fee only for 500–699, so no nursing add-on is applied to 800-level courses.
- Semester counts for fees use EMU’s published timelines. Part-time study adds semesters and $225 for each one.
- Certificate estimates exclude any prerequisite courses identified in the gap analysis.
- Rates are for 2026–27 and are subject to change by the EMU Board of Regents.
For Michigan residents, the nursing add-ons raise the base rate by about 8%, and the MSN lands near $60K all-in. Out-of-state students pay about $39,800 more for the same MSN at standard rates, so the online-rate question in the list above is worth a direct answer before applying.
Why Choose This FNP Program?
Best suited for Michigan nurses who want an adult-heavy primary care foundation, limited campus travel, and a clear route from AGPCNP to FNP.
Certified AGPCNPs adding a second population. The certificate’s 12-credit route, with 150 new clinical hours and three start terms a year, is the most efficient path EMU offers. Because the FNP concentration is built on the same adult-gerontology courses, there is little duplicated coursework.
BSN nurses choosing between MSN and DNP. Both degrees deliver the same 750 direct-care hours and the same FNP courses. The DNP costs about $32,600 more in-state and takes an extra year, and that money buys doctoral coursework and a scholarly project rather than additional clinical training.
Honest drawbacks. Family-specific training is compact: 90 pediatric hours and 60 antepartum/postpartum hours. The MSN and DNP admit once a year. EMU does not publish its placement model, and out-of-state pricing is unclear. Nurses who want heavy pediatric exposure, or who live outside Michigan, carry more risk here than Michigan-based nurses planning adult-focused family practice.
Accreditation
EMU’s BSN, MSN, and post-graduate APRN certificate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through December 2032, following a Spring 2022 reaccreditation. The DNP received initial CCNE accreditation for five years, through December 2027. CCNE’s scope covers all three FNP tracks on this page.
Eastern Michigan University is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Institutional accreditation supports eligibility for federal financial aid and the transfer of graduate credit.
EMU’s nursing program was approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing in 1973 and has held continuous professional accreditation since 1978.
Graduates of the MSN, BSN-DNP, and certificate are eligible to sit for the national FNP certification exam (AANP or ANCC) and then apply for nurse practitioner licensure in Michigan.
