Tuition estimates apply WKU’s 2026–27 per-credit rates ($707 distance learning, $607/$917 campus graduate, $663/$858 DNP) to each track’s credits.
Western Kentucky University builds its FNP programs for nurses who live in Kentucky or Tennessee and can reach Bowling Green on a handful of weekday afternoons. MSN applicants must live and complete clinical hours in one of those two states, and the MSN asks for 13 scheduled campus sessions spread across its lecture courses.
The trade-off is pricing that depends on the course, not just your residency. Online courses bill at a flat $707 per credit for everyone, while campus-coded courses bill at $607 (Kentucky) or $917 (non-resident). Kentucky residents pay more for online credits than campus credits, and Tennessee residents pay less.

Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner
The estimated tuition for the MSN at Western Kentucky University is approximately $24,887 to $28,987 for Kentucky residents (41 credits at $607–$707/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 2 years full-time (5 semesters) or 3 years part-time (7 semesters), based on WKU’s published plans of study.
Official program: Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing (149), Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration
MSN Curriculum
Structure. The 41 credits split into a 24-credit core and a 17-credit FNP concentration. Each specialty lecture course is paired with a separate clinical course, so you register for the theory and the hours as two line items. The pediatric block (NURS 546/547) and adult block (NURS 548/549) run in different semesters, and the full-time plan puts children first.
Campus sessions. Three lecture courses are coded hybrid. NURS 503 meets on campus five Thursday afternoons, NURS 546 four Wednesday afternoons, and NURS 548 three Tuesday afternoons. NURS 554 adds one skills day. Everything else is online.
Practice management. NURS 509 is a one-credit course on running an advanced practice role. It is short, but many FNP programs do not carry a standalone course on it.
- NURS 500 Advanced Physiological and Pathophysiological Concepts (4)
- NURS 503 Advanced Health Assessment (2) and NURS 505 Clinical (1)
- NURS 515 Advanced Pharmacology (4)
- NURS 521 Statistics in Health Care (3)
- NURS 546 Primary Care of the Infant, Child, and Adolescent (3)
- NURS 548 Primary Care of the Adult (3)
- NURS 509 Practice Management for Advanced Practice Nurses (1)
- NURS 554 Primary Care Internship (5)

You Should Know
- WKU publishes fall and spring plans of study and says cohorts begin each fall and spring. The same page encourages new applicants to choose a summer start so NURS 521 can be taken in summer. Confirm your actual entry term with the program.
- The plans of study carry 2023 version dates. Course sequence and campus-day counts may have changed since.
MSN Clinical Requirements
- 750 total clinical hours: NURS 505 (80) + NURS 547 (160) + NURS 549 (160) + NURS 554 (350)
- 80 hours per clinical credit in the first three clinical courses; 70 per credit in NURS 554
- Final-semester internship: 350 hours, about 23 hours a week over a 15-week term (derived)
- Pediatric and adult clinicals: 160 hours each, about 11 hours a week (derived)
- Clinicals must take place in Kentucky or Tennessee
- Placement model: Not clearly stated
At 750 hours, the MSN sits above the 600–700 range common among FNP programs and well above the 500-hour certification floor. The load is uneven: three semesters of moderate clinical time, then a final semester close to a part-time job. Plan your work schedule around that last term.
You Should Know
- WKU’s MSN pages do not say whether the school finds preceptors. The certificate application asks for your planned clinical location and potential preceptors, which suggests students are expected to help identify sites. Ask before applying.
MSN Admissions
Admission is competitive and space-limited, may include an interview, and WKU asks FNP applicants to contact the coordinator before applying.
- BSN from a nationally accredited nursing program
- Unencumbered RN license, held in the state where clinicals will be completed
- Live and complete clinicals in Kentucky or Tennessee
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0
- GPA 2.75–2.99 considered with a 3.0 in the last 60 BSN hours, strong materials, and a positive interview; admitted on probation (B or better in the first 12 hours)
- One year of RN experience before clinical coursework begins
- 500–700-word goal statement, three references (nurse manager or administrator; nursing faculty if a BSN graduate within 3 years), resume
- Contact FNP coordinator Eve Main before submitting the Graduate School application
You Should Know
- The RN-experience rule applies at the start of clinical coursework, not at admission. On the full-time plan, NURS 505 clinical runs in the first semester, so full-time applicants effectively need that year at entry.
- Application deadlines are referenced as “the due date on the program web page,” but no date appears there. Not clearly stated.
- Incomplete applications are not reviewed, and declined applicants must reapply in full for the next cycle.
BSN to DNP, Family Nurse Practitioner
The estimated tuition for the BSN-DNP at Western Kentucky University is approximately $50,388 for Kentucky residents (76 credits at $663/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 3 years full-time (9 terms, summers included) or 5 years part-time (14 terms), based on WKU’s published plans of study.
Official program: Nursing Practice, Doctor of Nursing Practice, BSN to DNP Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration
BSN-DNP Curriculum
Shared FNP block. The BSN-DNP uses the same FNP courses as the MSN: NURS 503/505, 546/547, 548/549, 509, and 554. The clinical training for certification is identical across both degrees.
Doctoral layer. On top of that block sit 39 credits of doctoral coursework: leadership in nursing practice, biostatistics, epidemiology, leadership, health policy, health economics, technology, program evaluation, quality improvement, and the IRB process. Six credits of NURS 780 Clinical Practicum carry the DNP project.
Saturday sessions. Seven doctoral courses meet four Saturdays a semester, on top of the weekday sessions in the FNP lecture courses and one campus meeting in NURS 601.
- NURS 601 Orientation to Doctor of Nursing Practice (2)
- NURS 620 Biostatistics for Healthcare Professionals (3)
- NURS 630 Advanced Epidemiology (3)
- NURS 714 Economic and Financial Influences in Healthcare Systems (3)
- NURS 750 Program Development and Evaluation in Healthcare (3)
- NURS 755 Quality Improvement in Healthcare (3)
- NURS 780 Clinical Practicum (6)
- NURS 554 Primary Care Internship (5)
More curriculum details are available here.
You Should Know
- The plans of study do not say whether the Saturday sessions are on campus or live online. Ask before assuming travel.
- Some WKU pages still list a Nurse Executive BSN-DNP concentration. The current catalog lists FNP as the only BSN-DNP concentration.
BSN-DNP Clinical Requirements
- 1,230 total hours on the published plan
- FNP hours: 750 (NURS 505, 547, 549, 554), matching the MSN
- DNP hours: 480 (NURS 740: 60, NURS 750: 60, NURS 780: 2 × 180)
- NURS 554 and one NURS 780 share a term on both plans: 530 hours in one semester
- Placement model: Not clearly stated
1,230 hours clears the 1,000 post-baccalaureate hours expected of a DNP. The heaviest stretch is the term that pairs the FNP internship with a project practicum: 530 hours, or about 35 hours a week. Both the full-time and part-time plans include that term (final spring and final fall, respectively).
BSN-DNP Admissions
The DNP sets a higher GPA bar than the MSN, and faculty may invite applicants to interview.
- BSN from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program
- Cumulative GPA of 3.25
- Current, unencumbered RN license in Kentucky or a compact state
- One year of full-time RN experience before enrolling in a clinical course
- Three professional references, written goal statement, resume
You Should Know
- The full-time plan’s first clinical-hour course (NURS 740) runs in the first summer, so the RN-experience year is effectively needed near entry.
- WKU’s licensure lookup lists the BSN-DNP FNP as “To Be Determined” in many states. Tennessee residents should check the Tennessee determination before enrolling.
Family Nurse Practitioner, Post-MSN Certificate
The estimated tuition for the Post-MSN Certificate at Western Kentucky University is approximately $10,319 to $12,019 for Kentucky residents (17 credits at $607–$707/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 1.5 years (3 semesters), with fall or spring entry.
Official program: Family Nurse Practitioner, Post-MSN Certificate (0449)
Certificate Curriculum
The certificate is the MSN’s 17-credit FNP concentration without the graduate core. Pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment with a clinical component are prerequisites; WKU will let you take NURS 500, 503, 505, and 515 if your MSN lacks them, adding up to 11 credits and 80 clinical hours.
- NURS 546 Primary Care of the Infant, Child, and Adolescent (3)
- NURS 547 Pediatric Clinical (2)
- NURS 548 Primary Care of the Adult (3)
- NURS 549 Adult Clinical (2)
- NURS 508 Advanced Issues in Professional Nursing (1)
- NURS 509 Practice Management for Advanced Practice Nurses (1)
- NURS 554 Primary Care Internship (5)
More curriculum details are available here.
Certificate Clinical Requirements
- 670 clinical hours: NURS 547 (160) + NURS 549 (160) + NURS 554 (350)
- 750 if NURS 505 is needed as a prerequisite
- Campus: four Wednesday afternoons (NURS 546), three Tuesday afternoons (NURS 548), one skills day (NURS 554)
- Application must name planned clinical location and potential preceptors
670 hours sits within the common 600–700 range. Because the certificate takes the same internship as the MSN, certificate students carry the same 23-hour-a-week final term.
Certificate Admissions
The certificate moves the RN-experience requirement to admission and limits seats by available clinical sites and preceptors.
- MSN, DNP, or higher in nursing from a nationally accredited program
- Cumulative MSN GPA of 3.0
- RN license (or pending application) in Kentucky or a compact state
- One year of full-time RN experience in a setting that supports primary care practice
- Goal statement naming planned clinical sites and preceptors; three references; resume
You Should Know
- The catalog accepts any compact-state RN license, but the program page says applicants should live and do clinicals in Kentucky or Tennessee. Treat the narrower rule as governing.
- WKU’s licensure lookup lists the FNP certificate as “To Be Determined” in many states. Tennessee residents should check the Tennessee determination before enrolling.
- State boards set their own rules for adding a second APRN population focus. Confirm your board accepts a 17-credit certificate before enrolling.
Tuition
WKU charges $707 per credit for graduate distance-learning courses regardless of residency, and $607 (Kentucky resident) or $917 (non-resident) per credit for campus-coded graduate courses. DNP students pay $663 (resident) or $858 (non-resident) per credit, with no distance-learning rate. These are published 2026–27 rates; program totals below are derived.
| Track | Credits | Resident | Non-Resident |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSN | 41 | $24,887 (all campus) to $28,987 (all online) | $28,987 (all online) to $37,597 (all campus) |
| BSN-DNP | 76 | $50,388 | $65,208 |
| Certificate | 17 | $10,319 to $12,019 | $12,019 to $15,589 |
The MSN’s 23 online credits likely bill at $707. Its 8 hybrid credits and 10 clinical credits may bill at the campus rate. Under that split, the derived MSN total is about $27,187 for residents and $32,767 for non-residents.
Confirmed costs
- Graduate distance learning: $707 per credit, all residencies
- Graduate campus: $607 resident, $917 non-resident domestic
- DNP: $663 resident, $858 non-resident
- College of Health and Human Services fee: $20 per NURS credit ($820 MSN, $1,520 BSN-DNP, $340 certificate)
- Course fees: $25 for NURS 505; $40 each for NURS 547, 549, and 554
Be aware that:
- WKU bills each graduate course by its modality code. The program pages do not say how hybrid and clinical courses are coded, so your exact total depends on course coding.
- A $221-per-credit DNP program fee appears on the 2026–27 cost sheet without limitation, while the catalog and tuition pages tie it to the MSN-to-DNP concentration. If it applied to the BSN-DNP, it would add $16,796.
- The course-fee schedule is labeled “through Summer 2025.” Current clinical course fees may differ.
- Whether the college fee applies to courses billed at the distance-learning rate is not clearly stated.
- Residents of Macon, Robertson, and Sumner counties in Tennessee qualify for in-state graduate tuition under a reciprocity agreement.
- Certificate students who need the prerequisites add up to 11 credits at graduate rates.
For a Kentucky resident, the MSN lands near $26K–$30K all-in with fees. For a Tennessee resident outside the three reciprocity counties, the flat online rate keeps most credits at $707, so the real total falls well below the $917 sticker. The BSN-DNP roughly doubles the MSN’s cost for 35 more credits and 480 more hours.

Why Choose This FNP Program?
Best suited for Kentucky and Tennessee nurses within reach of Bowling Green who want a mostly online FNP with 750 clinical hours and a public-university price.
Clinical volume at a state-school price. The MSN’s 750 hours exceed the common 600–700 range, and a Kentucky resident pays roughly $25K–$29K in tuition. The 350-hour final internship gives you sustained time in one practice before boards.
Three credentials on one FNP spine. The MSN, BSN-DNP, and certificate all run the same pediatric, adult, and internship courses. You can pick the credential by career goal and budget without changing the clinical training you receive.
Rule yourself out first. Skip WKU if you live outside Kentucky or Tennessee, cannot get to Bowling Green for 13 weekday sessions across the MSN, or need a school that guarantees preceptors. WKU does not publish a placement commitment. If none of those apply, the program offers strong hours and transparent per-credit pricing.
Accreditation
WKU’s master’s degree in nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and post-graduate APRN certificate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). That covers all three FNP tracks on this page, including the certificate.
The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Institutional accreditation supports federal financial aid eligibility and credit recognition by other institutions.
The Kentucky Board of Nursing approves WKU’s graduate nursing programs.
Graduates of the MSN and BSN-DNP, and completers of the post-MSN certificate, are eligible to sit for the national FNP certification exam (AANP or ANCC).
