BSN-DNP Family Nurse Practitioner

The estimated tuition for the BSN-DNP Family Nurse Practitioner specialization at SIUE is approximately $46,200 in tuition (66 credits at $700/credit), or $55,866 once general and course-specific fees are added. The program can generally be completed in about three years of full-time study across eight semesters, and SIUE describes three years as the minimum.

The Family Nurse Practitioner (Specialization) is SIUE’s only route to FNP certification. There is no master’s-level option, so a nurse who wants the FNP credential here is committing to the doctorate from the start.

BSN-DNP Curriculum

Science foundation. SIUE splits advanced physiology and advanced pathophysiology into two separate 4-credit courses taken in consecutive semesters. Most FNP programs compress this into a single 3-credit pathophysiology course. Eight credits of foundational science, taught sequentially, is a deliberate design choice: it front-loads the program with mechanism before management, and it means a student spends the entire first year in science and theory before touching a patient in an SIUE practicum.

FNP clinical sequence. Clinical management is organized by population rather than by acuity. Adult primary care is split across two courses in different years, with women’s health and pediatrics slotted between them. A separate course on diagnostic tests, interpretation and procedures sits alongside advanced health assessment in Year 2, which gives diagnostics its own credit-bearing slot instead of folding it into assessment.

DNP project spine. Six courses carry the doctoral project from an introductory seminar in Year 1 through five sequential design and management courses ending in Year 3. Spreading the project across six semesters is easier to sustain than a compressed capstone, but it also means project work runs concurrently with the heaviest clinical terms.

You Should Know
  • The published course sequence and the published tuition table disagree on the Year 1 credit split. The curriculum shows 7 credits in fall and 10 in spring; the tuition table bills 8 and 9. Both reach 66, so the degree total is not in question, but the first-year billing amounts will not match the course list.
  • SIUE publishes only a full-time plan of study. A part-time sample is available on request, and the DNP FAQ states a part-time progression for the FNP was still under consideration.
  • Course sequence is fixed. Any deviation requires approval from the assistant dean for the graduate program.
  • The retention policy is stricter than most graduate programs. A single D or F removes a student from the program with no repeat option, and a second grade of C triggers automatic removal regardless of GPA.

BSN-DNP Clinical Requirements

  • SIUE states that FNP DNP students complete over 1,000 practicum hours during the program.
  • Six courses carry practicum components: NURS 513, 571, 573, 572, 576 and 677, totaling 23 combined didactic and practicum credits.
  • Derived ratio: at 1,000 hours across 23 practicum-bearing credits, roughly 43.5 hours per credit. This is our calculation, not a published SIUE figure.
  • The final semester is anchored by a 5-credit advanced practicum and role synthesis course.
  • Practicum experiences are individualized to the student’s professional experience, interest and academic needs.
  • Out-of-state students are strongly encouraged to discuss clinical requirements with the assistant dean before applying, because clinical arrangements cannot be made in all states.

Over 1,000 hours is double the 500-hour floor required for national FNP certification and well above the 600 to 700 hours common in FNP programs. The number needs one important qualification, though. SIUE presents it in the context of the AACN standard requiring 1,000 hours of post-baccalaureate supervised specialty practice for any DNP, and that standard counts all supervised specialty practice, not only direct patient care. A DNP built on a doctoral project spanning six semesters will include project-related practice hours inside that total. Certification boards count direct patient care specifically, so the figure that matters for eligibility is not the one SIUE publishes.

You Should Know
  • No direct-patient-care subtotal is published anywhere in SIUE’s FNP materials. A nurse cannot confirm from public sources how much of the 1,000-plus hours is patient contact.
  • No per-course clinical hour allocation is published for the FNP specialization. SIUE does publish per-course hours for its psychiatric mental health track, which shows the school can produce this detail but has not for FNP.
  • Who secures preceptors and clinical sites is not clearly stated. SIUE’s FAQ describes students locating their own preceptors for the master’s specializations, but says nothing equivalent for the FNP DNP.
  • The warning that clinical arrangements cannot be made in all states is significant and is not paired with a published list of workable states. This should be resolved with the assistant dean before applying.

BSN-DNP Admissions

Two gates matter more than the GPA thresholds: admission requires a successful applicant interview by invitation only, and 1,872 hours of professional nursing practice must be completed before the first specialization clinical course rather than before enrollment.

The dual-license encouragement for St. Louis metro applicants is worth reading closely. SIUE sits directly across the river from St. Louis, and a nurse who holds only an Illinois license may find the usable pool of clinical sites narrower than the geography suggests. Paying for and maintaining a second state license is a real cost that does not appear in any tuition table.

You Should Know
  • SIUE’s state licensure disclosure for nurse practitioner programs reaches a determination in only a handful of jurisdictions. It records that educational requirements are met in Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, Texas and Wisconsin, that they are not met in Colorado and Washington, and that every other listed state and territory remains under pending review.
  • That disclosure sheet names four covered programs, and the Family Nurse Practitioner DNP is not among them. Whether the determinations above apply to this specialization should be confirmed in writing with SIUE’s licensure compliance office.
  • The deadline dates conflict across SIUE’s own pages. The program page lists two annual entry points, while the DNP FAQ states FNP applications are due February 1 for August admission, implying a single fall intake.
  • The application fee is also inconsistent, listed as $40 on the accelerated pathway page and $30 in the DNP FAQ.
  • International students are ineligible to receive a student visa for SIUE’s graduate nursing programs.
  • Current SIUE nursing undergraduates can apply for an accelerated combined-degree option that replaces up to six undergraduate nursing credits with graduate courses, shortening both time and cost. This route is closed to applicants from other institutions.

The rate is a specialized DNP tuition rate that every student pays regardless of residency, so there is no in-state or out-of-state distinction to calculate.

Be aware that:

  • SIUE’s own School of Nursing FAQ states DNP tuition is $650 per credit hour. The 2026-2027 program page states $700. Across 66 credits that is a $3,300 difference in tuition alone. The $700 figure carries the current academic year label and should be treated as governing, but the conflict is unresolved on SIUE’s site.
  • Course-specific fees are not flat. SIUE states they range from $90 to $1,500 per course. Reconstruction of the semester table shows they climb sharply in the clinical years: roughly $180 in Summer of Year 1 rising to about $740 in Fall of Year 3. Budgeting an even per-semester fee will understate the later terms.
  • The $700 rate is a specialized nursing rate. SIUE’s general graduate tuition for 2026-2027 is $384.30 per credit. The DNP rate is $315.70 more per credit, about 82% higher, which works out to roughly $20,836 in additional tuition across 66 credits compared with a standard SIUE graduate program.
  • SIUE states that rates beyond summer 2027 are not yet approved and are subject to change. Only the first year of a three-year program is priced at an approved rate.
  • The FAQ notes fees differ depending on whether a course is delivered online or face-to-face, which introduces a variable the published table does not itemize.
  • Costs outside tuition and fees include a second state RN license for St. Louis metro students, drug screening, background checks, and travel to annual on-campus immersions.

The honest reading of SIUE’s pricing is that it is neither cheap nor expensive in the abstract; it is unusually predictable in one dimension and unusually elevated in another. A nurse living outside Illinois pays exactly what an Illinois resident pays, which removes the single largest cost variable at most public universities. That same nurse is paying an 82% premium over what SIUE charges its other graduate students, for a program with 66 credits rather than the 45 to 50 typical of an MSN-level FNP. The all-in figure of $55,866 buys a doctorate, and it should be compared against other BSN-to-DNP programs rather than against master’s-level FNP tuition.

Why Choose This FNP Program?

This program fits nurses who are ready to commit to a doctorate on a fixed three-year schedule and who want a public-university price that does not change based on where they live.

Residency-blind pricing is the clearest advantage. At most public universities, an out-of-state nurse pays a substantial premium, often enough to erase any public-institution savings. SIUE removes that question entirely by applying one specialized DNP rate to everyone. For a nurse in Missouri, Wisconsin or Texas, three of the states where SIUE has affirmatively determined its NP education meets licensure requirements, this makes an Illinois public university priced the same way a private online program would be, without the private-program tuition.

The academic structure favors depth over speed. Eight credits of separately-taught physiology and pathophysiology, a standalone diagnostics and procedures course, and a doctoral project developed across six semesters all point to a program that is not optimizing for fast completion. Over 1,000 practicum hours reinforces that. SIUE also publishes its board pass rates, with the most recent posted year showing 100% first-time passage, though those figures are now several years old and should be refreshed with the school before they carry weight in a decision.

The commitment level is the real filter, and it should be checked first. SIUE offers only a full-time, three-year, fixed-sequence plan of study, and the school states plainly that working full-time during the program is not encouraged. That is a rare piece of candor, and it should be taken at face value. Before the price advantage matters, a prospective student needs three answers: whether three years of reduced income is workable, whether SIUE can arrange clinicals in their state, and whether their board of nursing appears in the resolved column of SIUE’s licensure disclosure. Nurses who can answer yes to all three are getting a well-structured doctorate at a price that does not penalize their zip code. Nurses who cannot answer yes to the first one should look at part-time MSN-level FNP programs instead, because SIUE currently has no part-time FNP path to offer them.

Accreditation

SIUE states that the baccalaureate degree program in nursing, master’s degree program in nursing, and Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The FNP specialization sits inside the DNP program, so it is covered by that DNP accreditation rather than holding a separate accreditation of its own.

The institution is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. SIUE completed a comprehensive reaffirmation review in 2025, with HLC’s peer reviewers identifying no areas of concern, and the next comprehensive institutional review scheduled for 2035. Institutional accreditation is what makes federal financial aid available and what allows credits to transfer, so a clean reaffirmation with a decade-long horizon removes a category of risk that matters for a three-year commitment.

Graduates are eligible to sit for the national FNP certification exam through either the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board. Dual eligibility is standard for CCNE-accredited FNP programs, and it gives graduates a choice of certifying body rather than locking them into one.
