Tuition estimates use UMSL’s 2026-27 College of Nursing graduate per-credit rates, which already include campus fees under its Simplified Tuition model.

UMSL has not admitted a nurse practitioner student into an MSN since 2015. BSN-prepared nurses enter a 70-credit DNP, and UMSL runs a direct-admit route that lets its own BSN graduates (and its externship completers) start without RN experience, provided they keep working as RNs throughout. Nurses who already hold a graduate degree can take a post-graduate certificate built on the same diagnosis-and-management courses and the same practicum sequence.

The trade-off is cost and travel. The doctorate runs about $70,600 for Missouri residents, roughly three times the NP-route certificate, and every track carries on-campus immersive sessions in St. Louis. The clinical requirement is also moving: UMSL’s handbook raises practicum hours from 600 to 750 for students enrolling Summer 2026 and later, while the catalog still lists the 600-hour, 8-credit structure.

BSN to DNP, Family Nurse Practitioner Emphasis

The estimated tuition for the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner Emphasis at UMSL is approximately $70,630 for Missouri residents (70 credits at $1,009/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 3 years (9 semesters) full-time or 4 years (12 semesters) part-time.

BSN-DNP Curriculum

Doctoral core first, specialty late. The published part-time plan spends the first year and a half on 30 credits of DNP foundation courses (systems, policy, informatics, epidemiology, biostatistics). Pathophysiology and pharmacology arrive in the second year, and the FNP diagnosis-and-management sequence does not begin until the end of year two. Nurses expecting early clinical content should plan for a long runway.

A separate diagnostic reasoning course. UMSL teaches Introduction to Diagnostic Reasoning (NURSE 6530) as its own 3-credit course before practicum, rather than folding it into assessment. It carries an on-campus immersive component.

Family focus in three blocks. The FNP specialty is 11 credits: Foundations of Pediatric Health, then Adult Health I and II. Pediatric content sits in a single 3-credit course, so the family scope is weighted toward adult care in coursework.

Project runs alongside the final practicum year. The three Clinical Scholarship Project courses overlap Practicum II and III. The project proposal defense serves as the comprehensive exam, and the final product requires a publishable paper, poster, and oral defense.

You Should Know
  • The catalog’s course tables total 67 credits with 8 practicum credits. The 70-credit figure includes a 3-credit elective that appears only in the handbook’s plan of study.
  • Students must enroll in spring, summer, and fall. Skipping a term without an approved leave can end enrollment.
  • The handbook defines full-time as 9 credits per semester. The program page describes full-time loads of 5-10 credits, so some full-time terms may fall below that threshold, which matters for financial aid.

BSN-DNP Clinical Requirements

  • Practicum: 8 credits at 75 hours per credit = 600 direct patient care hours (catalog). ⚠️ Handbook (updated December 2025): 750 hours for students enrolling Summer 2026 and later.
  • Practicum credits split across three courses (1-4 credits each); students choose the split.
  • Systems hours: 400, from simulation, immersive sessions, and Clinical Scholarship Project work, for a 1,000-hour DNP minimum (1,150 under the 750-hour rule).
  • Immersive sessions: scheduled in Health Assessment, Diagnostic Reasoning, and each practicum (76 simulation hours listed in the handbook).
  • Required DNP orientation: Thursday and Friday before the first fall term.
  • Placement tracking: CastleBranch for compliance and myClinicalExchange for sites. Students arrange their own transportation.

At 600 hours, UMSL sits at the low end of the common 600-700 range for FNP programs. The 750-hour rule moves new students above it, which spreads to about 250 hours per practicum term, or roughly 15-16 hours a week over a 16-week semester. That is a meaningful schedule commitment for a working nurse across three consecutive terms. UMSL does not state who secures preceptors, so applicants should ask directly how placement works for students outside the St. Louis area.

You Should Know
  • Campus visit counts conflict across UMSL’s own materials: the marketing page cites one three-day intensive, the program document cites four 2-3 day intensives, and the handbook’s plan of study lists five immersive sessions.
  • If practicum rises to 750 hours (10 credits at 75 hours per credit), total program credits may change. UMSL has not published an updated credit total.
  • Some courses meet in live synchronous virtual sessions. Schedules are not published in advance.

BSN-DNP Admissions

Admission is fall-only, holistic, and space-limited, with a second route for UMSL-connected applicants.

  • BSN from a nationally accredited program, with a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 BSN credits
  • Current RN license; completed statistics course (grade of C or higher)
  • Essay (three prompts), CV, and two professional references from master’s- or doctorally prepared nurses or faculty
  • Applied through NursingCAS
  • Priority deadline January 15 each year; rolling admission until the class fills or July 31
  • Decisions in March for priority applicants; within four weeks during rolling admission
  • Direct Admit: UMSL BSN graduates or UMSL Externship in Nursing completers; no prior RN experience required, but students must work as RNs throughout the program
You Should Know
  • The direct-admit GPA conflicts: the catalog requires 3.75, while UMSL’s program document lists 3.0.
  • Seats go first to guaranteed (direct-admit) applicants, so general applicants compete for the remaining space.
  • UMSL cannot enroll online students from every state. Students located in a state where UMSL has not confirmed licensure eligibility must sign an attestation naming a state where it does. Moving mid-program can end enrollment. Check the UM System state authorization page before applying.

Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate

The estimated tuition for the Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate at UMSL is approximately $22,198 to $31,279 for Missouri residents (22 to 31 credits at $1,009/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 1 year (3 semesters) for nurse practitioners adding a population, or about 1.7 years (5 semesters) for graduate nurses without NP preparation.

Certificate Curriculum

Two published routes. UMSL’s handbook gives separate plans of study. The NP route (22 credits) covers the FNP specialty sequence, Diagnostic Reasoning, and 8 practicum credits. The non-NP route (31 credits) adds pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment for MSN or DNP holders in education, leadership, or other non-APRN roles.

Same clinical spine as the doctorate. Both routes use the BSN-DNP’s specialty courses and practicum sequence. The certificate drops the 30-credit doctoral core and the scholarship project, which is where the cost difference comes from.

  • NURSE 6518 Pathophysiology (non-NP route)
  • NURSE 6520 Pharmacology (non-NP route)
  • NURSE 6524 Health Assessment (non-NP route)
  • NURSE 6530 Introduction to Diagnostic Reasoning (3)
  • NURSE 6723 Foundations of Pediatric Health (3)
  • NURSE 6739 Adult Health I (4) and NURSE 6740 Adult Health II (4)
  • NURSE 6954 Practicum I (3), 6955 Practicum II (1), 7954 Practicum III (4)

More curriculum details are available here.

You Should Know
  • The catalog sets only a 12-credit minimum at UMSL. Actual credits come from an individual gap analysis, so a plan may differ from the 22- and 31-credit samples.
  • The NP-route plan begins in summer and the non-NP plan begins in fall. UMSL does not publish separate certificate deadlines.
  • Certificate students have five years to finish.

Certificate Clinical Requirements

  • Practicum: 8 credits at 75 direct patient care hours per credit = 600 hours (catalog); 750 hours for Summer 2026 and later entrants (handbook)
  • Practicum split in the NP-route plan: 3, 1, and 4 credits across three terms
  • On-campus immersive sessions in Diagnostic Reasoning and Practicum I-III (plus Health Assessment on the non-NP route)
  • Same compliance requirements as the DNP: CastleBranch, myClinicalExchange, background check, and drug screen

Certificate students complete the same practicum hours as doctoral students, so clinical preparation for the FNP exam is equal across credentials. The load is heavier, though: the NP-route plan packs Practicum III’s 4 credits (300 hours at the current ratio) into one spring term, about 19 hours a week over 16 weeks.

You Should Know
  • UMSL’s certificate page labels the program “100% Online,” but the handbook marks four certificate courses with on-campus immersive requirements.
  • Placement responsibility is not clearly stated.

Certificate Admissions

  • MSN or DNP from a nationally accredited nursing program
  • Graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Current RN license
  • Applied through NursingCAS
You Should Know
  • State boards set their own rules for adding a second APRN population focus. Nurse practitioners licensed outside Missouri should confirm their board accepts a post-graduate certificate for FNP licensure.
  • The same state-authorization limits as the DNP apply.

Tuition

UMSL charges $1,009 per credit for Missouri residents in 2026-27 College of Nursing graduate programs (DNP and post-graduate certificate). The rate is published by the bursar and already includes campus fees: UMSL’s Simplified Tuition model, in place since Fall 2023, folds course and supplemental fees into one per-credit rate.

TrackCreditsResident ($1,009)MSEP ($1,514)Non-Resident ($1,970)
BSN-DNP70$70,630$105,980$137,900
Certificate (NP route)22$22,198$33,308$43,340
Certificate (non-NP route)31$31,279$46,934$61,070

All totals are derived (credits times the published rate). Rates are from UMSL’s 2026-27 tuition and fee schedule.

  • Resident rate applies to Missouri, Illinois, and St. Louis metro residents.
  • Midwest Student Exchange (MSEP) rate: 150% of the resident rate, for degree-seeking residents of Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
  • CastleBranch background check, drug screen, and compliance tracker: $158.72 one time.

Be aware that:

  • Rates rose about 3% from 2025-26 ($980 resident, $1,913 non-resident). Expect annual increases over a 3-4 year doctorate.
  • MSEP is limited to degree-seeking students. Whether certificate students qualify is not clearly stated, and MSEP status must be applied for separately after admission.
  • If the 750-hour rule adds two practicum credits, the BSN-DNP would cost about $2,018 more for residents.
  • Travel for immersive sessions, required orientation, and health insurance are student costs.

For Missouri residents, the doctorate costs about $39,000 more than the non-NP certificate for the same clinical training. That premium buys the DNP core, the scholarship project, and the terminal degree. Out-of-state applicants face nearly double the resident cost, so MSEP eligibility is worth checking before comparing UMSL against other schools.

Why Choose This FNP Program?

Best suited for nurses who already want a doctorate, live within reach of St. Louis, and value a public university’s resident pricing.

New UMSL BSN graduates. The direct-admit route lets UMSL’s own BSN graduates move straight into NP training without the RN experience many programs require. The catch is that they must hold an RN job the whole time, alongside practicum hours that may reach 750.

Graduate nurses adding FNP. The certificate gives MSN- or DNP-prepared nurses the same practicum hours as the doctorate for about a third of the credits. The NP route can finish in one year.

Who should look elsewhere. BSN nurses who want an MSN have no route here; UMSL ended its MSN NP programs in 2015. Nurses far from St. Louis should weigh repeated immersive trips and unstated placement support. Anyone who needs fixed numbers should note that UMSL’s own sources disagree on campus visits, practicum hours, and direct-admit GPA.

Accreditation

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredits UMSL’s Doctor of Nursing Practice and its post-graduate APRN certificate programs, as well as the BSN. Both FNP tracks are covered.

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accredits the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Regional institutional accreditation supports federal financial aid eligibility and credit transfer.

UMSL states that NP graduates of both the DNP and the post-graduate certificate are eligible to sit for national board certification in their population of focus. FNP graduates can take the national FNP certification exam (AANP or ANCC).
