Tuition estimates use Mizzou’s published 2026-27 online graduate nursing rate of $681.30 per credit, which has included former course and technology fees since Fall 2023.

Mizzou checks FNP skills in person, not just online. MSN and DNP students return to Columbia for leveled competency assessments tied to specific courses, and a dedicated Procedures and Diagnostics course sends them into urgent and emergent care settings before the primary care sequence begins.

That oversight comes with self-sourced clinicals. Students find their own local preceptors, submit contracts at least 12 weeks before each rotation, and cannot use sites in states whose nursing boards restrict out-of-state clinicals.

Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner

The estimated tuition for the MSN with an emphasis in Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Missouri is approximately $34,406 (50.5 credits at $681.30/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 3 to 3.5 years of part-time study (9 to 10 semesters, derived from the published year range and a fall/spring/summer calendar).

MSN Curriculum

Structure. The 50.5 credits split into a graduate core (writing, roles, research, policy, evidence-based practice), the advanced practice foundation, and a five-course primary care sequence capped by a 3-credit practicum. Each primary care course carries 2 didactic and 1.5 clinical credits, so clinical time is spread across the sequence rather than saved for the end.

What stands out. NURSE 7145 Procedures and Diagnostics is a full 3.5-credit course with a clinical component in urgent and emergent care settings. Most FNP programs fold procedures into health assessment. A 2-credit Family Dynamics course adds family assessment and intervention models. The program closes with NURSE 8990 Practice Inquiry, a written integrative review and oral master’s exam that Mizzou says doubles as groundwork for a later DNP project.

  • NURSE 7140 Advanced Health Assessment and Promotion (3.5)
  • NURSE 7145 Procedures and Diagnostics (3.5)
  • NURSE 8010 Family Dynamics and Intervention (2)
  • NURSE 8400 Adult and Geriatric Primary Care I (3.5)
  • NURSE 8410 Adult and Geriatric Primary Care II (3.5)
  • NURSE 8420 Newborn Through Adolescence Primary Care (3.5)
  • NURSE 8430 Reproductive and Sexual Health Primary Care (3.5)
  • NURSE 8550 Advanced Diagnostics and Reasoning in Practice (3.5)
  • NURSE 8980 Advanced Clinical Nursing Practicum (3)
  • NURSE 8990 Practice Inquiry (1)

More curriculum details are available here.

You Should Know
  • Mizzou’s online program page describes a 14-credit core, its course planner totals 17 core credits, and the catalog lists 15. All three sources still reach 50.5 credits in total.
  • Some courses meet in regular or occasional synchronous online chats. The course schedule lists which ones.

MSN Clinical Requirements

  • Minimum 750 clinical hours (published)
  • Primary care sequence: 630 hours, matching 10.5 clinical credits at 60 hours per credit (5 courses at 1.5 clinical credits plus the 3-credit practicum)
  • NURSE 7140 adds 90 hours (1.5 clinical credits); NURSE 7145 adds urgent or emergent care hours not itemized
  • Students recruit their own local preceptors; site and preceptor need course-faculty approval before any hours count
  • Preceptor application and agency contract due at least 12 weeks before the rotation when no contract exists
  • Three in-person campus events: Level I Student Success Seminar (2 days), Level II assessments with 7140/7145 (3 days), Level III assessment with 8550 (3 days, held in October)

At 750 hours or more, the MSN sits above the 500-hour certification floor and at the upper end of the common 600 to 700-hour range. Spread across part-time study, each 1.5-credit clinical course works out to about 6 hours a week in a 15-week term. The heavier lift is placement: a student who has not lined up a preceptor three months out risks delaying the course.

You Should Know
  • The online course planner lists clinical subtotals of 360 and 630 hours, which add to 990, not the 750 minimum stated on the same page. Course-level math supports 630 for the primary care block; the 360 figure could not be reconciled from published credit splits.
  • The Level III assessment runs only in fall, which effectively ties NURSE 8550 to a fall term. Check your plan of study before choosing a start term.
  • The program page says campus visits occur three times; the course tab says once per year. The published on-campus schedule supports three course-linked visits.

MSN Admissions

Every applicant completes a recorded interview, and recommenders must be master’s or doctorally prepared nurses or faculty.

  • BSN from a nationally accredited nursing program
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 60 credits of undergraduate nursing coursework (leadership or scholarship evidence considered below that)
  • Current, unencumbered RN license
  • Curriculum vitae and two professional recommendations
  • Kira Talent interview through NursingCAS
  • Application deadlines: February 15 for fall and summer starts; September 30 for spring
  • Up to 9 credits may be taken as a non-degree student before admission
You Should Know
  • The September 30 deadline for the January 2027 start has passed. The next spring cycle follows the same annual date.
  • Mizzou cannot accept online applicants from every state. Check the state authorization dashboard before applying, since moving to a non-authorized state mid-program may end enrollment.

Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner

The estimated tuition for the DNP with an emphasis in Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Missouri is approximately $49,054 (72 credits at $681.30/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 4 to 6 years part-time for BSN entrants (12 to 18 semesters, derived), or about 3 years for nurses who already hold a master’s degree.

BSN-DNP Curriculum

Shared FNP spine. The DNP uses the same FNP courses as the MSN, including Procedures and Diagnostics, Family Dynamics, and the five-course primary care sequence. The difference is depth: several primary care courses can expand from 3.5 to 5 credits, adding up to 1.5 extra clinical credits each.

Doctoral layer. The DNP adds epidemiology, informatics, quality and safety, program design, a DNP clinical residency, and a residency project. NURSE 8310 Health Disparities of Rural and Other Underserved Populations turns the school’s stated rural focus into a required course, which the MSN does not include. NURSE 8089 Transition to APRN Practice supports the move into the NP role.

  • NURSE 8100 Principles of Epidemiology (3)
  • NURSE 8310 Health Disparities of Rural and Other Underserved Populations (3)
  • NURSE 8830 Informatics Applications and Innovations in Health Care Systems (3)
  • NURSE 8920 Quality, Safety, and Performance Outcomes (3)
  • NURSE 8930 Health Program Design and Management (3)
  • NURSE 8089 Transition to APRN Practice (1)
  • NURSE 9070 DNP Clinical Residency (1 to 5)
  • NURSE 9080 DNP Residency Project (3)
  • NURSE 9087 Leadership and Transformational Role Institute (2)

More curriculum details are available here.

You Should Know
  • Listed courses total 68.5 to 75.5 credits depending on how many variable-credit options a student takes. Electives fill the gap to 72, so the final count is set in an individual plan of study.
  • A graduate statistics course is a prerequisite and may need to be taken first.
  • Some courses require weekly synchronous chats.

BSN-DNP Clinical Requirements

  • Minimum 1,000 faculty- or preceptor-supervised clinical hours (catalog DNP policy)
  • Same student-sourced preceptor model, 12-week contract lead time, and faculty approval as the MSN
  • Four in-person campus events: Levels I, II, and III, plus a Level 4 final competency assessment (2 days in April) that coincides with on-campus DNP project presentations
  • DNP project proposal presentation is held virtually
  • Post-master’s entrants may transfer prior clinical hours with advisor approval

A 1,000-hour minimum is the standard national DNP floor, not an outlier. Spread over 4 to 6 years, the weekly load is moderate, but the residency and project hours cluster late in the plan. The April Level 4 visit adds a fourth trip to Columbia that MSN students do not make.

You Should Know
  • The online program overview describes a five-day orientation the summer before classes, while the published on-campus schedule shows a 2-day Level I seminar in the first fall or spring term. Confirm the current orientation format with the school.
  • Published duration varies: 4 to 5 years in the quick facts, and 5 to 6 years for part-time BSN entrants in the program structure section.

BSN-DNP Admissions

The DNP sets a higher GPA bar than the MSN and asks for three recommendations instead of two.

  • BSN or master’s degree from a nationally accredited nursing program
  • Minimum 3.3 GPA in the last 60 undergraduate nursing credits (BSN entry) or 3.5 (master’s entry)
  • Three professional recommendations from master’s or doctorally prepared nurses or faculty
  • Master’s entrants submit APRN certification documents and verification of prior clinical hours
  • Kira Talent interview; same deadlines and three start terms as the MSN

Graduate Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner

The estimated tuition for the Graduate Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Missouri is approximately $14,648 (21.5 credits at $681.30/credit). The program can generally be completed in about 2 years of part-time study (6 semesters, derived).

Certificate Curriculum

This certificate adds FNP as a second population focus for nurses who already practice as certified APRNs. It runs the same primary care sequence as the MSN, with the practicum set at 4 credits (derived from the 21.5-credit total). Post-master’s students take NURSE 8980; post-DNP students take NURSE 9070 instead.

  • NURSE 8400 Adult and Geriatric Primary Care I (3.5)
  • NURSE 8410 Adult and Geriatric Primary Care II (3.5)
  • NURSE 8420 Newborn Through Adolescence Primary Care (3.5)
  • NURSE 8430 Reproductive and Sexual Health Primary Care (3.5)
  • NURSE 8550 Advanced Diagnostics and Reasoning in Practice (3.5)
  • NURSE 8980 Advanced Clinical Nursing Practicum or NURSE 9070 DNP Clinical Residency (1 to 5)

More curriculum details are available here.

You Should Know
  • NURSE 7120, 7130, and 7140 (9.5 credits) must already be complete. Without equivalent transcripted coursework, they add about $6,472 and at least a semester.
  • NURSE 7145 Procedures and Diagnostics is recommended but not required.

Certificate Clinical Requirements

  • Minimum 750 clinical hours (published)
  • Course math: 690 hours in the required sequence (11.5 clinical credits at 60 hours) plus 90 in the 7140 prerequisite, for 780
  • Same student-sourced preceptor model and faculty approval as the MSN
  • No campus visits required, per the program page

The certificate trims nothing from FNP clinical training. Certified APRNs get the full MSN-level hour count while skipping the graduate core and on-campus travel.

You Should Know
  • MSN and DNP students attend the Level III campus assessment when enrolled in NURSE 8550. The certificate page says no campus visits are required, though certificate students take the same course. Confirm with an advisor.
  • Some classes require synchronous chats.

Certificate Admissions

This is not a route for non-NP master’s holders. Applicants must already hold national APRN certification, and leadership certification does not qualify.

  • BSN and master’s degree from nationally accredited nursing programs
  • Current APRN certification
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 60 credits
  • Two professional recommendations, CV, and Kira Talent interview
  • Start terms: fall (apply by February 15) or spring (apply by September 30); no summer start
You Should Know
  • State boards set their own rules for adding a second APRN population focus. Check your board before enrolling.

Tuition

Mizzou charges $681.30 per credit for online graduate nursing students, Missouri residents and nonresidents alike. Since Fall 2023, the University of Missouri has folded former course fees and the information technology fee into this per-credit rate.

TrackCreditsRateEst. Tuition
MSN50.5$681.30$34,405.65
BSN-DNP72$681.30$49,053.60
Certificate21.5$681.30$14,647.95
  • Totals match Mizzou’s published 2026-27 estimates for each track.
  • Graduate application fee: $75 for degree programs; $40 for the certificate.
  • Military and veteran students may qualify for a 10% reduction in base tuition.

Be aware that:

  • The rate rose about 3% from $661.50 in 2025-26. The Board of Curators sets rates each year.
  • MU’s Student Activity Fee is $30.60 per credit, capped at 9 credits a semester. The cashier’s page does not say whether fully online students pay it. If they do, it adds about $1,545 (MSN), $2,203 (DNP), or $658 (certificate).
  • Certificate applicants missing 7120, 7130, or 7140 add up to 9.5 credits, about $6,472.
  • DNP totals can shift with elective and variable-credit choices.
  • Travel to Columbia for three (MSN) or four (DNP) campus events is out of pocket.

For a public university, the residency-blind rate is the main cost lever. A nonresident pays the same $681.30 as a Missourian, and the rate already absorbs most fees that inflate other schools’ advertised prices. The DNP costs about $14,648 more than the MSN for 21.5 extra credits.

Why Choose This FNP Program?

A fit for nurses who want an online FNP with real in-person skills testing and have the local network to secure their own preceptors.

Hands-on verification. The leveled campus assessments give faculty a direct look at each student’s procedural and diagnostic skills at three points in the program. Paired with a standalone procedures course and urgent care clinical exposure, the MSN builds hands-on skill that fully remote programs often leave to the preceptor.

Clear pathway logic. BSN holders choose between a 50.5-credit MSN with built-in DNP groundwork and a 72-credit DNP with a required rural health disparities course. Certified APRNs adding FNP get the full 750-plus clinical hours through a fully online certificate at about $14,648.

The trade-offs. Mizzou does not find preceptors. The 12-week contract lead time, state-board restrictions on clinical sites, and a fall-only Level III checkpoint all reward early planning. Nurses without local clinical contacts, or those who need placement support, should weigh that before applying.

Accreditation

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredits the Sinclair School of Nursing’s master’s degree, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and post-graduate APRN certificate programs. All three FNP tracks fall within that scope.

The Higher Learning Commission accredits the University of Missouri. Regional institutional accreditation supports federal financial aid eligibility and makes credits easier to transfer.

Mizzou reports a 96.5% FNP certification pass rate for the MSN and 100% for the certificate, though it does not publish the cohort year or size.

Graduates of the MSN, DNP, and certificate meet the educational requirements for the national FNP certification exam (AANP or ANCC).
