|---|---|---|---|
| MSN | $51.8K | 2 years (4 semesters + 2 summers) | 42 |
Tuition estimates use Dominican’s 2026-27 FNP rate of $1,190 per credit plus the $245 part-time registration fee for six terms and the $300 graduation fee.
Dominican University New York built its FNP program for working nurses in the Rockland County and northern New Jersey area. Every student studies part time, with lecture courses held on weekday evenings, typically two nights a week, and graduates in 24 months with 750 clinical hours.
The trade-off is the clinical search. Students arrange their own preceptors and sites, and the Clinical Coordinator approves them. Applicants should also know that the university’s institutional accreditor, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, placed Dominican on non-compliance warning in June 2026. The nursing program’s CCNE accreditation is separate.

Master of Science, Family Nurse Practitioner
The estimated tuition for the Master of Science, Family Nurse Practitioner at Dominican University New York is approximately $51,750 (42 credits at $1,190/credit, plus registration and graduation fees). The program can generally be completed in about 2 years (four semesters and two summer sessions), with a five-year maximum to finish.
MSN Curriculum
Age-segmented practica. Instead of generic FNP I, II, and III courses, Dominican splits its first three practica by age group: children through young adults, middle-aged adults (“middlescence”), and older adults. Each carries 150 clinical hours. A fourth integrated course then pulls the lifespan together with 300 hours and the written capstone.
Clinical work starts early. The sample plan places the first practicum (the middle-aged adult course) in the third term, right after health assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. The pediatric practicum comes later, in the fifth term. Students carry a practicum in four of six terms.
Research-heavy for an MSN. Research and theory courses account for 9 of the 42 credits, and role differentiation adds 2 more. The capstone can build on a proposal started in the research sequence.
- NR 520 Principles of Pathophysiology (4 credits)
- NR 500 Comprehensive Health Assessment (4 credits)
- NR 540 Pharmacology in Health and Disease (4 credits)
- NR 600 and NR 610 Research Praxis I and II (3 credits each)
- NR 640 Advanced Practice Family Nursing I: Children, Adolescents, Young Adults (4 credits)
- NR 660 Advanced Practice Family Nursing II: Middlescence (4 credits)
- NR 680 Advanced Practice Family Nursing III: Elder Care (4 credits)
- NR 700 Integrated Advanced Practice Nursing (4 credits)
- One 3-credit elective: health policy, health care financing, curriculum design, measurement and evaluation, or inferential statistics

You Should Know
- The catalog lists “all 500 and 600 level courses” as prerequisites for NR 680, but the sample plan schedules NR 680 before NR 610 and NR 640. Confirm the actual sequence with the program director.
- Elective course numbers differ between the program page and the course descriptions (for example, Power, Politics, and Policy appears as both NR 730 and NR 630).
- Students must earn a B in every clinical course and keep a 3.00 GPA. Only one course may be repeated, once.
MSN Clinical Requirements
- 750 total clinical hours: 150 each in NR 640, NR 660, and NR 680, plus 300 in NR 700
- Students arrange their own preceptors and sites; the Clinical Coordinator approves sites, preceptors, and contracts
- Settings include primary care, urgent care, long-term care, and community health centers
- Hospitals, emergency rooms, and specialty groups may be used only in the final semester
- Clinical days and times are not guaranteed; students work around preceptor availability
- Student Nurse Practitioner malpractice insurance is required before the first rotation
At 750 hours, Dominican sits above the common 600 to 700 hour range and well above the 500-hour certification floor. The load is manageable in the first three practica (roughly 10 hours a week across a 15-week semester, derived) but doubles in the final spring, when 300 hours works out to about 20 hours a week on top of evening classes. Because placements are self-arranged, nurses with existing contacts in local practices start with a real advantage.
You Should Know
- The program page says clinical placements “are available at many top locations,” but the catalog states that students individually arrange their own. Plan on doing the search yourself.
- The catalog warns that full-time workers must give clinicals priority. Expect to use vacation or reduced shifts, especially in the final 300-hour term.
- Summer session length is not published, so the weekly load for the summer practicum is not clearly stated.

You Should Know
- The sample plan starts in summer and runs in a fixed order, which suggests one annual entry point. Other start terms are not clearly stated.
- Admitted students may defer for one year by written request to the program director.
Tuition
Dominican charges $1,190 per credit for the FNP program in 2026-27 (published). Because no term in the sample plan exceeds 8 credits, students pay the part-time registration fee rather than the full-time rate.
| Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | 42 credits × $1,190 | $49,980 |
| Part-time registration | 6 terms × $245 | $1,470 |
| Graduation fee | One time | $300 |
| Estimated total (derived) | $51,750 |
Confirmed costs:
- FNP tuition: $1,190 per credit (2026-27), up from $1,155 in 2025-26
- Part-time registration: $245 per term
- Graduation fee: $300
- Application fee: $50 (non-refundable)
Be aware that:
- The $51,750 total prices all 42 credits at 2026-27 rates. The rate rose about 3% from 2025-26, and second-year credits will likely be billed at a higher 2027-28 rate.
- An FNP continuance fee of $1,190 per term applies in some cases. The tuition page does not define when; ask whether it applies to students who extend the program or finish the capstone late.
- The estimate assumes registration fees apply in both summer sessions.
- Required malpractice insurance, health records, and travel to clinical sites are billed outside tuition.
- Students may defer tuition payment to the end of each term.
With fees, the effective cost is about $1,232 per credit before any rate increase. Spread across six terms, that is roughly $8,600 per term, which makes the end-of-term payment deferral useful for nurses paying from salary or waiting on employer reimbursement.
Current rates are published on Dominican’s graduate tuition page.
Why Choose This FNP Program?
Best suited for nurses who want live evening classes close to home, can keep working full time, and already have local contacts who could serve as preceptors.
Built around a full-time shift. Every student follows the same part-time evening schedule, so classmates share the same work-and-school balance. Faculty are practicing APRNs in emergency medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, and school health, and the program reports a 96.88% board certification pass rate for 2023.
Clinical volume above the common range. The 750 hours and three age-specific practica give graduates dedicated time with children, middle-aged adults, and older adults. That structure helps nurses whose RN experience is limited to one population.
What to weigh. Self-arranged placements add real work to an already full schedule. Commuting to Orangeburg twice a week limits the program to the local area. The MSCHE warning does not affect CCNE accreditation, but it is worth asking the university how it plans to resolve it.
Before applying, answer three questions: Can you reach Orangeburg two evenings a week for two years? Do you know preceptors who could take you for 150 to 300 hours? Can your employer flex your schedule in the final spring? If all three answers are yes, this program fits.
Accreditation
The Master of Science, Family Nurse Practitioner is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), which covers Dominican’s baccalaureate and master’s nursing programs. The program is also registered by the New York State Education Department, and the Division of Nursing is approved by the New York State Board of Nursing.
Dominican University New York is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). On June 25, 2026, MSCHE placed the university on non-compliance warning. The university remains accredited while on warning. Institutional accreditation matters for federal financial aid eligibility and for how other schools view your credits.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the national FNP certification exam (AANP or ANCC).
